dot.communications protects the credibility of companies and executives when AI systems, crises, restructuring, and market uncertainty shape public perception.

Companies invest in compliance, risk management, and cybersecurity because they need to identify and manage risks early. Communications now serves a similar purpose. It does more than create visibility: it acts as an early warning system and a way to monitor trust.

Communications shapes how companies are perceived, whether stakeholders develop trust, and how effectively organizations can act amid change, uncertainty, or public scrutiny.

At a glance

The question is no longer “What do stakeholders think of us?” but “What do AI systems say about us when people ask?”

What is strategic communications consulting?

It helps companies reduce communications risks, build trust, and support business objectives through clear strategies, narratives, and communications structures.

Our guiding principle

Companies rarely fail for lack of information. They struggle when decisions are not understood, changes are not accepted, or reputations are damaged. Communications makes a difference.

Definition

What is strategic communications consulting?

Strategic communications consulting helps companies identify communications risks early, build trust with relevant stakeholders, and retain their ability to act during change and crises.

It connects business objectives with communications objectives and develops the necessary strategies, early warning systems, narratives, and messages.

It also puts the organizational foundations for effective communications in place, from clear responsibilities and processes to the capabilities communications and marketing teams need.

The goal is less risk, not more communication: less risk to reputation, credibility, acceptance of decisions, and long-term business success.

Why does strategic communications consulting matter to companies?

Business decisions rarely fail because of the strategy itself; they often falter in execution. The international PROI Transformation Readiness Index 2025 reports that one in three transformations begins without a well-considered communications strategy. Resistance, uncertainty, and loss of trust often arise from a lack of direction rather than from the change itself.

Strategic communications consulting helps companies identify these risks early and manage change so people understand and accept it and implementation succeeds.

Why dot.communications? Our perspective

Many focus on visibility. We focus on trust. Our consultants have backgrounds in journalism, corporate communications, and strategic consulting. We understand how public opinion takes shape and how trust can be built over years or lost in days. That is why we treat communications as a strategic driver of value, rather than a standalone campaign.

“More than 200 engagements have taught us that a sound communications strategy is essential to reducing risk and supporting lasting business success, especially in challenging economic times. Our goal is therefore less risk, not more communication: a stronger reputation, greater credibility, and acceptance of decisions that are necessary for the business.”

Birgit Jakobs, Founder and Managing Director, dot.communications

When clients seek our advice

Common situations, from reputational risk to early crisis detection

Companies’ greatest challenges today often stem from a lack of acceptance, a loss of trust, or conflicting perceptions rather than from the decision itself. Strategic communications consulting addresses precisely these issues. Common situations include:

Risks

What risks do companies face?

Three current developments require active attention:

AI systems shape perceptions of companies and CEOs

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude increasingly answer questions from customers, job candidates, journalists, and investors. Companies have less direct control over which information appears in those answers and which sources are considered credible.

→ What this means: Reputation is no longer shaped solely by news media and search engines. Companies need to actively shape the content, sources, and narratives visible online and reduce the risk of false or negative AI narratives reaching investors, journalists, and other stakeholders.

Past events remain visible

AI systems can repeatedly surface past crises, legal disputes, or negative coverage and reproduce them in new contexts. These events can affect perceptions of companies and executives even years later.

→ What this means: Reputation is not static. It needs ongoing attention and current, credible communications to strengthen it.

Change fails when people do not support it

Transformations, restructuring, and new technologies rarely fail because of the strategy alone. Often, people lack direction, clear explanations, and an opportunity for relevant stakeholders to become involved early.

→ What this means: Many business challenges also present communications risks. Communicating early builds acceptance and reduces resistance.

Bringing strategy, brand, and business reality together

An international company in a highly competitive market had refined its vision, purpose, and brand promise through several strategy processes. The challenge was to bring these strategic elements together in a credible storyline that would resonate with different audiences and clearly explain the company’s actual value.

Competitive analysis

New brand strategy

Consistent key messages

Challenge:

We critically reviewed the existing positioning, analyzed what different audiences expected, and clarified the relationship between business strategy, brand promise, and specific services. Together with the client, we developed core strategic messages and positioning options that sharpened its purpose and provided a sound foundation for communications, brand development, and business growth. We also developed a communications model for its two-person leadership team, with clear roles and topic ownership.

Outcome:

Individual messages became a consistent framework connecting business strategy, brand promise, and services. This strengthened competitive differentiation and built trust internally among employees and executives and externally among customers and partners.

Digital Sovereignty and Artificial Intelligence in Education

A public institution is working with all 16 German states to advance the digital transformation of education. Alongside the technology, the challenge is to build support for a shared vision: a sovereign digital education infrastructure for Germany.

Strategic consulting

Risk analysis and crisis preparedness

16 German states and more than 6 other audiences

Challenge:

We support strategic communications on digital sovereignty and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in education. The aim is to bring different groups together through communications, from political decision-makers and associations to schools, teachers, parents, and the public, and develop a shared narrative about the future.

Outcome:

The work focuses on how trust in new technologies develops through transparency, accessible communications, and tangible opportunities for children and young people. It also shows how collaboration among the German states is a strength of the federal system.

Ongoing engagement

Anchoring a future project through communication

An internationally active industrial company invested a high double-digit million amount in a new production site and a forward-looking technology platform. The project stood for sustainability, innovation, and a long-term commitment to Germany as a production location. The communication was aimed at very different target groups, from employees and politicians to the regional public, customers, partners, and investors.

360° communication strategy

Political and business stakeholders

Storytelling across media

Challenge:

Our role was to support the project’s communications and develop a shared narrative for its different stakeholders. The engagement covered strategic communications consulting, positioning the core messages, planning and delivering communications for the opening, and designing and supporting a high-level dialogue about the future with ministerial-level political representatives and business leaders.

Outcome:

Beyond the region, the project was seen as more than an investment in a new site. It also became a visible commitment to innovation, sustainability, and industrial value creation in Germany. Early stakeholder involvement and consistent communications built trust in the strategic shift and strong acceptance of the project among the public and, especially, employees.

Closing a site following a production transfer

An international company closed a site employing several hundred people and moved production. We supported communications primarily during the second phase: the employment-related, political, and public discussions involving the works council, unions, employees, news media, and policymakers.

12 months of project support

More than 8 audiences

360° communications strategy

Reputation protected

Challenge:

We analyzed and assessed internal reputational risks in advance, including employees’ loss of trust in management, declining productivity, and the departure of key staff, then developed communications to address them. We did the same for external risks: negative news coverage, social media campaigns, political criticism, reputational damage among customers, pressure on the employer brand, and criticism from investors or stakeholders focused on ESG issues. A comprehensive communications plan covered every audience, scenario, and measure over approximately a year and was implemented with the client.

Outcome:

Our restructuring communications were grounded in transparency, respect, and responsibility. The reasons for the closure were explained clearly and supported by business facts. Specific support measures and the approach to the social plan were communicated clearly and promptly at employee meetings, town halls, and press conferences. Professional communications helped contain social media campaigns and foreseeable negative narratives and avoid more extensive reputational damage.
